Romano started his career racing in the junior classes before making the switch to Moto3 in 2013. He finished second on his debut at Qatar and promptly won the second race of the season at Jerez, becoming the first rider since Noburo Ueda to take two podiums in his first Grand Prix starts. In 2014 he joined the Sky Racing Team by VR46, taking four podiums and four wins on his way to fifth position in the rider standings. In 2015 Romano took a race win at Le Mans and enjoyed top five finished in eight races, finishing fourth in the championship. In 2016 Romano took pole at the opening round in Qatar before taking the race win at the Circuit of the Americas. He then took a second-place finish at Le Mans, before securing another pole at Mugello. The following season he joined the Marinelli Rivacold Snipers Moto3 team, taking a pole, three wins and eights podiums on his way to the runner-up spot in the rider standings.
